Term: Ancient astronaut theory: the idea that ancient sky beings were physical visitors from other planets, a different explanation from the one in this post.
Term: Star gods: a term for beings described in ancient myth as ruling or visiting from the sky, found in Greek, Aztec, and other traditions.
Ancient UFO Sightings Before Modern Technology
People described strange objects in the sky for thousands of years before anyone invented an aircraft. Ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Hindu writings mention circles of fire, fleets in the sky, and flying craft. Medieval Europe produced illustrated broadsheets of sky battles. None of these predate the twentieth century's aircraft technology, and all of them describe something people could not identify.
Ancient texts
The disputed Tulli Papyrus describes circles of fire seen in the sky during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III, around 1480 BC, though its authenticity is contested. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder recorded sky sightings in his encyclopedic Natural History. Ancient Hindu texts, including the Mahabharata, describe flying vehicles called vimanas that move unpredictably and appear to fight in the sky. I treat each of these with caution, since ancient sources are harder to verify than modern ones, and I say so directly rather than presenting them as settled.
Medieval Europe
In April 1561, residents of Nuremberg reported an aerial spectacle of spheres, cylinders, and cross-shaped objects filling the sky, illustrated in a printed broadsheet at the time. In 1566, Basel saw red suns and black spheres that seemed to fight before the rising sun. In 1665, six fishermen near Stralsund watched a sky battle followed by a flat disk hovering over a church, and reported illness afterward. These events were recorded close to when they happened, not centuries later, which sets them apart from folklore.
Star gods across cultures
Many ancient cultures described ruling or visiting beings connected to the sky. The Aztec and Mayan rulers claimed descent from sky gods. Greek myth describes Uranus, god of the heavens, overthrown by his son Cronus in the Titanomachy. Some researchers read these stories as garbled memories of real encounters, shaped by each culture's own language and beliefs. That reading is an interpretation, not a proven fact.
Why the pattern matters
If people across separate cultures and centuries, with no contact with each other, described similar sky phenomena using similar language, that argues against secret modern technology or media contagion as the full explanation. It does not prove what the phenomenon is. Ancient sources are also harder to check than a 1947 newspaper report, and some accounts likely grew or changed in the retelling.
What is solid and what is not
The Nuremberg, Basel, and Stralsund broadsheets exist and are dated close to the events. The Tulli Papyrus and the Hindu vimana texts are older and harder to verify. In my book Disclosure: They Are Not Extraterrestrials, I use this ancient pattern to argue against the idea that the whole phenomenon began with modern aviation. Disclosure is available on Amazon.
