Are Most UFOs Just Misidentified Objects?

By CK Quarterman

Yes, most UFO reports turn out to be ordinary things. Among the cases AARO closed between May 2023 and June 2024, about 70 percent were balloons, 16 percent drones, 8 percent birds, 4 percent satellites, and 2 percent aircraft.

Term: Misidentification: the mistaking of an ordinary object, such as a planet, balloon, or aircraft, for something unusual.

Term: Unresolved case: a report that officials could not explain, usually because the data was too limited.

Term: AARO: the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, the Pentagon office that analyzes UAP reports.

Are Most UFOs Just Misidentified Objects?

Yes, most UFO reports turn out to be ordinary things. Among the cases AARO closed between May 2023 and June 2024, about 70 percent were balloons, 16 percent drones, 8 percent birds, 4 percent satellites, and 2 percent aircraft. Project Blue Book left about 5.5 percent of its reports unidentified. The question that matters is what the remaining share is, and the data often is too limited to say.

The Pentagon’s numbers

AARO received 757 new reports between May 2023 and June 2024 and 319 between June 2024 and May 2025. In its fiscal year 2025 report, it resolved 114 of the 319 new reports, mostly as balloons and satellites, with the rest as birds, aircraft, drones, one rocket launch, and one person using a jet pack. It moved 191 to an active archive because it lacked data to reach a conclusion.

The older numbers

Project Blue Book collected 12,618 reports from 1952 to 1969 and left 701, about 5.5 percent, unidentified. The 2021 intelligence assessment reviewed 144 reports and could explain one, a large deflating balloon. It said that limited data made most of the others impossible to judge.

Why misidentification is so common

Most people are not trained to judge distance, size, or speed in the sky. Planets such as Venus and Jupiter can look like objects that follow a car. Balloons, drones, and satellites can look strange at night. Pilots and radar operators make mistakes too. Sensors can also create false targets, as AARO’s analysis of the GoFast video suggested when it concluded that the apparent speed came from parallax.

The famous examples

Officials and skeptics have explained the Hill case’s bright light as possibly Jupiter, the 1978 Kaikōura lights as Venus, squid boats, and radar effects, and the 1976 Tehran light as possibly Jupiter. Those explanations are disputed by some witnesses and researchers, but they show how often bright astronomical objects appear in UFO reports.

The share that stays unexplained

A small share stays unresolved. The Pentagon says that in most of those cases the data is too limited to reach a conclusion. AARO’s fiscal year 2024 report said 21 cases merited further analysis because of reported anomalous characteristics. AARO has also said it found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology. An unresolved case is a case with too little data, and it does not mean the object was proven to be exotic.

What I take from the numbers

The numbers do not support the claim that every UFO is an alien craft, and they do not support the claim that nothing unexplained remains. In my book Disclosure: They Are Not Extraterrestrials, I focus on the residue of cases that resist ordinary explanation and on how old that pattern is. Disclosure is available on Amazon.
