Could UFOs Be Secret Government Aircraft?

By CK Quarterman

Some UFO reports were secret government aircraft. The National Reconnaissance Office says spy planes such as the U-2 and A-12 explained a number of Cold War reports.

Term: Black program: a classified government project whose existence is not acknowledged.

Term: U-2 and A-12: high-altitude spy planes flown by the CIA and Air Force in the 1950s and 1960s.

Term: Yankee Blue: the name reported in 2025 for a false story that some Air Force personnel were told about an alien technology recovery program.

Could UFOs Be Secret Government Aircraft?

Some UFO reports were secret government aircraft. The National Reconnaissance Office says spy planes such as the U-2 and A-12 explained a number of Cold War reports. A 2025 Wall Street Journal report also described a long practice of feeding false UFO stories to cover secret projects. Secret technology cannot explain reports from before flight existed or every modern case.

What secret aircraft explained

In the 1950s and 1960s, high-flying spy planes appeared as strange lights to airline pilots and witnesses on the ground. The National Reconnaissance Office has said that a number of Project Blue Book reports can be explained by flights of the then-secret U-2 and A-12 aircraft. The Air Force did not always say so at the time, because the planes were classified.

Disinformation as cover

In June 2025, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Pentagon’s AARO had found that for decades some Air Force personnel had been shown images of flying saucers and told they were part of a secret alien-technology recovery program, called Yankee Blue. The program was fictional. Former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick said the military allowed UFO rumors to grow so that they would hide real projects, such as stealth aircraft. AARO’s 2024 history report also says some UAP reports were misidentified sensitive national security programs.

Malmstrom and the EMP claim

The same reporting said the 1967 Malmstrom missile incident was tied to a classified electromagnetic pulse test. Critics dispute this and say the documents cited date the proposal for the relevant system to 1971, four years after the event. It is an example of how the claim of secret technology can itself be contested.

Where the explanation stops

Secret aircraft cannot explain sightings from before aircraft existed. Reports such as Nuremberg in 1561, Basel in 1566, and Stralsund in 1665 predate powered flight by centuries. They also do not explain a pattern of effects that appears in reports across many periods. A secret project may explain a particular modern light, and it does not explain the historical record.

The claim that goes too far

It is also a mistake to say that all UFOs are government aircraft. Some modern reports involve objects and behavior that officials say they cannot identify, and AARO reports say a number of cases lack enough data to resolve. The government’s own history shows that it has misled the public before. That is a reason for care, and it is not proof of what anything is.

What is solid and what is not

It is documented that some UFO reports came from secret aircraft and that some officials spread false UFO stories. It is not shown that secret technology explains the whole subject. In my book Disclosure: They Are Not Extraterrestrials, I treat secret technology as one of the common objections, and I explain why it does not cover the historical reports.
