What Happened at Varginha in 1996?
In January 1996, residents of Varginha, Brazil, reported small, dark-colored beings in the streets and fields near their homes. Three young women who came within a few feet of one of them reported a powerful sulfurous smell and a feeling of intense dread, and one of the women fell ill and was hospitalized. Military units responded, and reports said at least one body was taken to a regional hospital under escort. The Brazilian government has never given a full accounting.
The sighting
On January 20, 1996, Liliane and Valquíria Silva and their friend Kátia Xavier were walking home when they said they saw a creature crouched beside a wall near a vacant lot. They described a figure about four feet tall, with oily brown skin, large red eyes, and three bumps on its head. They ran home in fear. They reported a powerful smell and a feeling of intense dread.
The military response
In the following days, reports spread of firefighters and military vehicles in the area, hospital activity, and the capture of one or more creatures. Some accounts said a military police corporal, Marco Eli Chereze, had helped capture one. He developed an infection and died on February 15, 1996. Medical records describe sepsis and respiratory failure.
The smell
Witnesses described the smell as sulfur. Sulfur is a smell often reported in historical accounts of encounters with dark spiritual beings.
Later accounts
Decades later, a neurosurgeon said he had come face to face with a living creature in a Varginha hospital. Researchers in Brazil have collected hundreds of witness statements over the years.
What is solid and what is not
Several witnesses reported a strange encounter, and a soldier died of a documented infection weeks later. What the witnesses saw is not established, and the reports of a capture rest on testimony. In my book Disclosure: They Are Not Extraterrestrials, I include Varginha as one of five detailed cases. Disclosure is available on Amazon. You can find more of my work at ckqbooks.com.
