In February 1987, sonar operator David Barnett says the Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Southland tracked an object roughly 800 feet long and 150 feet wide. The object closed a 20‑kilometer gap in about 30 seconds, passed directly beneath the ship, and knocked out its power.
Term: USO. An Unidentified Submerged Object. A sonar or visual contact under the water’s surface that resists ordinary explanation, the underwater counterpart to a UFO.
What Is the HMNZS Southland USO Incident?
In February 1987, sonar operator David Barnett says the Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Southland tracked an object roughly 800 feet long and 150 feet wide. The object closed a 20‑kilometer gap in about 30 seconds, passed directly beneath the ship, and knocked out its power. Physicist Kevin Knuth has used Barnett’s account to calculate speeds that, in his view, don’t match anything we understand about how objects move through water.
Who Told This Story, and When
Kevin Knuth teaches physics at the University at Albany and previously worked as a researcher at NASA Ames. He first presented the Southland case in 2024, at the Sol Foundation’s inaugural symposium on unidentified anomalous phenomena. He repeated the story in a recent interview with journalist Ross Coulthart on NewsNation’s “Reality Check” podcast, recorded at the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies conference in Toronto.
What Happened, According to Barnett
The Southland was about 175 nautical miles northeast of the tip of New Zealand’s North Island when its sonar picked up the object. The ship tracked it on two systems, the G750 sonar and a Type 177M attack sonar. The object closed a 20‑kilometer distance in roughly 30 seconds, then passed beneath the ship. Barnett says that’s when the Southland lost power completely. The crew sat without electricity for four hours until a passing fishing boat spotted them.
What Knuth’s Numbers Say
Running the distance and time Barnett described, Knuth calculates a minimum speed near 1,490 mph and a peak speed near 3,000 mph, with a minimum acceleration around 4.5 g. He argues that speed underwater, with no reported surface disturbance to match it, is difficult to explain with ordinary physics.
Why the Case Is Hard to Verify
The story rests on one witness describing a night nearly forty years in the past. No sonar logs, engineering reports, or after-action assessments have surfaced publicly. No other crew member has come forward to corroborate it. Some researchers who have looked into Southland’s known deployment records say the ship was somewhere else during part of the window Barnett describes. The Royal New Zealand Navy has never confirmed the incident.
None of that proves the story false. It means the honest version includes the physics Knuth calculated and the gaps in the evidence behind it. A single uncorroborated account, however compelling the math built on top of it, is still a single uncorroborated account.
Where This Leaves the USO Question
Knuth’s work on the Southland case sits alongside his more heavily documented research on the 2004 Nimitz Tic‑Tac encounter, published in the peer‑reviewed journal Entropy in 2019. The Southland story doesn’t have that kind of paper trail behind it. If a fuller record ever surfaces, whether that’s sonar plots, ship’s logs, or a second crew member willing to speak, it will either confirm what Barnett described or close the case. Until then, it stays exactly where Knuth left it: a striking account, waiting on evidence.
CK Quarterman. C. K. Quarterman is a retired entrepreneur, author, and researcher who spent decades building and operating companies in the computer and telecommunications industries before turning to the questions that had fascinated him his whole life. He writes about ancient civilizations, biblical mysteries, and unexplained phenomena, combining historical investigation with storytelling that pushes readers to examine the evidence for themselves. His research is grounded in decades of pastoral counseling and a decade of hands‑on ministry work: four years serving the homeless and people battling addiction, three years pastoring a congregation, and three years running a deliverance ministry that worked with people by phone and Skype, people who had nowhere else to turn.
