Who Is Steven Greer?

Steven Greer is a retired emergency room physician from Charlotte, North Carolina, who says he saw a UFO up close at age eight. He founded CSETI, the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence, and the Disclosure Project, which advocates for government transparency about UFOs. Greer holds that the beings behind UFO reports are here to help humanity, a view that puts him at odds with researchers such as Chuck Missler and L.A. Marzulli, and with my own view in this book.

His background and organizations

Greer worked as an emergency room physician before turning full time to UFO research and advocacy. He founded CSETI and later the Disclosure Project, which collects testimony from military, government, and intelligence witnesses who say they have knowledge of UFO events or classified technology.

The 2001 press conference

In 2001, Greer organized a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., featuring more than 20 witnesses, including retired military officers and government employees, who testified publicly about UFO-related events or suppressed technology. It drew wide press attention at the time.

His claimed access

Greer says he has personally briefed a CIA Director, top Pentagon generals and admirals, and briefed President Obama through senior advisor John Podesta. These meetings are described in his own accounts and in supportive press coverage. I have not found independent confirmation of every meeting he describes, and some claims about the content of those briefings rest on Greer's own account.

Where he differs from other researchers

Greer holds that the beings behind UFO encounters are benevolent and that the real danger is a military-industrial complex that hypes their threat to protect secret programs. This is the opposite of the argument in my book. I hold, with Missler and Marzulli, that the record of harm across history points the other way, and that a benevolent framing is itself part of the pattern of deception I describe.

What is solid and what is not

Greer's medical background, his organizations, and the 2001 press conference are documented. The extent and content of his briefings with senior officials rest largely on his own account. His conclusion that the beings are friendly is a minority position among researchers in this field, and I do not share it. In my book Disclosure: They Are Not Extraterrestrials, I present Greer as an important but contested figure. Disclosure is available on Amazon. You can find more of my work at ckqbooks.com.
