Term: Numinous experience: a term for the feeling of being in the presence of something powerful, mysterious, and beyond the ordinary world.
Term: Contact modification: a term some researchers use for lasting changes in belief, worldview, or spiritual outlook that experiencers report after an encounter.
Why Do UFO Encounters Often Include Spiritual Experiences?
Many people who report close UFO encounters describe more than a strange sighting. They describe a sense of dread, awe, or being in the presence of something far beyond an ordinary aircraft. Some come away with lasting changes to their beliefs about God, death, or their purpose in life. Researchers have documented this pattern for decades, and they disagree about what produces it.
The pattern researchers describe
Reports across many close encounters describe an overwhelming sense of awe, dread, or a feeling that the observer was in the presence of an intelligent, watching force, rather than a simple machine. The 1978 Kaikoura film crew reported a feeling of dread and unease none of them could fully explain. The Ariel School children in Zimbabwe in 1994 described a similar overwhelming feeling. Some experiencers report a lasting change in outlook afterward, including a new focus on spiritual questions.
How researchers explain it
Fear of the unknown can naturally produce feelings that resemble religious awe, since both involve a sense of being small in the presence of something vastly more powerful. Psychologists have also studied how a frightening experience can permanently shift a person's beliefs, whether or not the underlying event was what the person thought it was.
The biblical framing
In this book I connect the spiritual weight of these encounters to the idea that the beings involved are not neutral machines but spiritual entities. Scripture repeatedly describes encounters with angelic and demonic beings as producing fear, trembling, and a sense of being overwhelmed, as in Daniel 10:8 to 10 and Job 4:13 to 15, discussed in earlier posts. I read the pattern in modern UFO reports as consistent with that older pattern, though I recognize this is an interpretation, not a proof.
The limits of the pattern
Not every UFO report includes a spiritual or emotional dimension. Many are brief sightings of lights with no accompanying feeling of dread or awe at all. The cases that do include this element are the ones that draw the most attention and the most speculation, which can create a skewed impression of how common the pattern actually is.
What is solid and what is not
That many close encounter accounts include strong, often religious-feeling emotional reactions is documented across decades of case reports. Why that pattern exists, whether from the nature of a real encounter, ordinary fear response, or something else, is not settled. In my book Disclosure: They Are Not Extraterrestrials, I connect this pattern to the book's larger argument that the phenomenon is spiritual rather than purely technological.
