Term: Extraterrestrial hypothesis: the view that UFOs are physical craft piloted by beings from other planets or star systems.
Term: Fermi paradox: the observation, named for physicist Enrico Fermi, that the universe should contain many advanced civilizations, yet we see no clear evidence of them.
Why the Alien Hypothesis Leaves Important Questions Unanswered?
The extraterrestrial hypothesis, the idea that UFOs are craft piloted by beings from other planets, faces three problems that are rarely addressed together. It does not easily account for sightings that predate modern aviation by centuries. It runs directly into the speed of light, since the nearest star is 4.2 light-years away. And it does not explain why so many close encounters carry a spiritual or emotional weight that goes beyond what a simple space-travel visit would suggest.
The history problem
If UFOs are physical craft from other worlds, arriving only in the twentieth century for the first time would make sense. Instead, similar reports appear in ancient Egyptian and Hindu writings and in detailed European accounts from Nuremberg in 1561, Basel in 1566, and Stralsund in 1665, long before anyone had built an aircraft. The extraterrestrial hypothesis has to treat these older reports as unrelated to modern ones, even though many share the same basic features: hovering craft, colliding spheres, and illness in witnesses.
The distance problem
The nearest star to our sun, Proxima Centauri, is about 4.2 light-years away. No object with mass can reach the speed of light, and our fastest spacecraft would take thousands of years to make the trip. I cover this in detail in an earlier post. A civilization advanced enough to solve interstellar travel is possible in principle, but nothing in physics as we understand it today shows how it would be done.
The behavior problem
Reports describe craft that vanish, reappear, evade radar, and seem to interact directly and personally with individual witnesses, rather than behaving like a scouting mission from a distant civilization would be expected to behave. Some researchers who favor the extraterrestrial hypothesis, such as Steven Greer, argue the beings are benevolent visitors. Others in this field, including Chuck Missler and L.A. Marzulli, read the same behavior as evidence against a simple space-visitor explanation, and I share that reading.
What the hypothesis gets right
The extraterrestrial hypothesis correctly notices that something in the reports resists ordinary explanation, and it takes witnesses seriously rather than dismissing every case. Its weakness is not that it takes the phenomenon seriously. Its weakness is that it assumes an origin, distant planets, that the evidence does not clearly support once you weigh the history, the physics, and the behavior together.
What is solid and what is not
The historical reports, the distances involved, and the documented behavior of unexplained craft are each independently well established. That they add up to a problem for the extraterrestrial hypothesis specifically is my argument and the argument of other researchers in this field, not a settled scientific conclusion. In my book Disclosure: They Are Not Extraterrestrials, I lay out this case at length and propose a different explanation. Disclosure is available on Amazon.
