God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods. ... I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
God stands in the congregation of the mighty, judging among the "gods" (elohim). Verse 6 declares, "I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High," followed by a pronouncement that they will die like men and fall like princes.
A divine council scene where God judges other elohim, beings addressed directly as "sons of the Most High." Jesus cites this psalm in John 10:34-35, which keeps the passage active in New Testament argument as well as Old Testament background.
CKQ Commentary
C.K. Quarterman first published this reading of the divine council publicly online in 2012, ahead of Michael Heiser's 2015 book The Unseen Realm, which brought the divine council view of Psalm 82 to a wide popular audience. He holds the same reading Heiser later systematized: the "gods" of Psalm 82 are members of a heavenly council under God's judgment, not human judges or rulers, and Jesus draws directly on this passage in John 10:34-35.
