And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: "I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin." And they all answered him and said: "Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing."
Shemihazah and two hundred watchers swear a mutual oath on Mount Hermon before taking human wives, spreading responsibility so no single watcher bears the judgment alone.
Chapter 9 of the same book shows the archangels Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel observing the bloodshed on earth on their own initiative and reporting it to God directly. No watcher confesses; nobody informs on anybody. That pattern (God sees without being told) runs throughout Genesis 6 as well and reframes what the oath was actually for.
CKQ Commentary
Shemihazah was not trying to prevent detection. His own words assume judgment is already coming. The oath spreads guilt across two hundred watchers so no single one of them can be singled out and left to answer for the rest. A group that already accepts it will be caught, and spends its energy managing what happens next, is acting with calculation, not ignorance.
