Elioud
Also known as: Eljo, Eliud
The third generation of giant hybrids in Second Temple Jewish literature, descended from the Watchers through the great giants and the Naphil.
Jubilees 7:21-25 describes three tiers of offspring from the Watchers’ union with human women. The Watchers fathered the great giants, the great giants fathered the Naphil, and the Naphil fathered the Eljo. The Greek fragment of 1 Enoch preserved by the chronicler George Syncellus renders the third tier Elioud.
The Syncellus fragment states that the women bore the Watchers three races: first the great giants, who brought forth the Naphelim, who brought forth the Elioud. Jubilees records the same chain in its account of their violence: the giants slew the Naphil, the Naphil slew the Eljo, and the Eljo slew mankind.
Each generation stands one step further from its angelic origin and closer to ordinary humanity.
The ancient sources treat the Elioud as antediluvian, ending with Noah’s flood. Jubilees 10 adds that a tenth of the disembodied spirits of the giants were permitted to remain on the earth after the flood. Genesis 6:4 likewise says the Nephilim were on the earth in those days “and also after that.”
