What Was the Judgment of the Watchers?
The judgment of the fallen Watchers describes how God bound these angels in darkness, reserving them for fire on the great day, with specific sentences for leaders like Azazel and Semjaza.
## What Was the Judgment of the Watchers?
The Book of Enoch records the sentence on each fallen Watcher, and Jude and Peter confirm it. The binding has happened. The fire is still to come.
Watchers: a class of heavenly beings named in Daniel 4 and the Book of Enoch. The fallen Watchers are the two hundred angels who descended on Mount Hermon.
Tartarus: the Greek term behind “cast them down to hell” in 2 Peter 2:4, a prison for divine beings who rebelled.
## What Was the Judgment of the Watchers?
God bound the fallen Watchers in darkness and reserved them for fire on the day of the great judgment. Enoch records the sentences by name. Jude 6 and 2 Peter 2:4 confirm that the angels who sinned are held in chains until that day.
## Azazel, Bound in Darkness
“Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire.” (1 Enoch 10:4-6)
Azazel received the harshest individual sentence. Enoch gives the reason: “the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azazel: to him ascribe all sin” (1 Enoch 10:8).
## The Children Set Against Each Other
God sent Gabriel against the children of the Watchers: “destroy the children of the Watchers from amongst men: send them one against the other that they may destroy each other in battle: for length of days shall they not have” (1 Enoch 10:9). The bloodshed Jubilees describes between the Naphidim, the Naphil, and the Elioud was commanded as part of the sentence.
## Semjaza and the Two Hundred
God told Michael to bind Semjaza and his associates “for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement” (1 Enoch 10:11-12). The binding comes after the Watchers watch their children destroy one another. The judgment includes grief. Seventy generations echoes Jeremiah’s seventy years and Daniel’s seventy weeks, and the book reads it as the full span of the present age.
## Tartarus and the Chains of Darkness
Peter writes that God “spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment” (2 Peter 2:4). The word behind “cast them down to hell” is tartaroo, built from Tartarus. In Greek thought, Tartarus was a prison beneath Hades for rebellious divine beings. The book holds that Peter chose the word on purpose.
Jude 6 says the angels who “kept not their first estate” are held “in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” That matches Enoch’s “cover him with darkness.” Jude quotes Enoch by name a few verses later.
## A Sentence Carried Out and a Judgment Still to Come
The binding has already happened. The book places it at the time of the Flood or shortly after. The fire has not come. Enoch, Peter, and Jude all describe the angels as reserved for the great day. The Watchers are not free, and they are not finished.
## The Spirits the Flood Left Behind
The giants died in the Flood, but Jubilees says something survived them. In Jubilees 10:5, Noah prays that God will imprison “these spirits which are living” and hold them “in the place of condemnation.” Enoch says the spirits of the giants “will be called evil spirits on earth.” The book reads these passages as an early answer to where demons come from.
