Demonology

A figure named once in the Hebrew Bible, in Isaiah 34:14. Scholars debate whether the word names a female night demon or a night bird or other wild creature.

Inanna, the ancient Sumerian "Queen of Heaven," was later syncretised as the Akkadian Ishtar, the Canaanite Astarte/Ashtart, and finally appeared in the Hebrew Bible as the deity Ashtoreth.

The Bible never uses the word “vampire.” It never describes an undead creature that drinks blood. It does contain two things people connect to the legend. The first is the Alukah of Proverbs 30:15, Alukah is a Hebrew word meaning “leech” that appears once in Proverbs 30:15 and is sometimes linked by scholars to a blood‑drinking demon, while Rephaim are giants and dead spirits associated with Sheol.

Shedim are spirit beings mentioned twice in the Hebrew Bible to whom Israel offered sacrifices, including child sacrifice; the biblical text treats them as demonic.

Goat-form spirit beings named in four passages of the Hebrew Bible. Israel was forbidden to sacrifice to them, and they are described as inhabiting wilderness and ruins.

This post explains the biblical differences between the Hebrew terms se’irim and shedim, showing they are distinct spirit beings and how later tradition connects them.

No one can show that. No federal agency has confirmed a demonic cause, and Paulides does not claim one.

Two things. First, the specific ground that let the spirit in has to be named and renounced, not just felt or generally confessed.

Two ancient Jewish texts, 1 Enoch and Jubilees, explain that demons are the lingering spirits of the giant offspring of the Watchers, bound after the flood.

The se’irim are goat-form spirit beings named in Leviticus 17:7, 2 Chronicles 11:15, Isaiah 13:21, and Isaiah 34:14. Israel was forbidden to sacrifice to them.

Azazel is a name in Leviticus 16, tied to the Day of Atonement goat that was sent alive into the wilderness. Leviticus never calls him a fallen angel.

Lilith appears by name once in the Bible, in Isaiah 34:14, in a poem about the ruin of Edom. Scholars disagree on what the word means.

Hosea names it twice. In 4:12, the spirit of whoredoms causes God’s people to err and leads them away from Him.

Yes. Costa Rica’s Bribri and Cabécar peoples of the Talamanca region preserve traditions that closely parallel the Sumatran material, though the resemblance is not exact and Costa Rica sits in Central America rather than South America.

The Sumatran vampire legend that Kurt Koch describes in Occult ABC comes from a 1970s news report about a South Sumatran woman whose five husbands reportedly died of severe anemia. A traditional spiritual practitioner blamed an entity named Nagasjatingarong, described as a vampire that wanted the woman for itself.
