Descent of the Watchers

In this passage, Jude is quoting from the ancient Book of Enoch (specifically 1 Enoch 1:9), an apocryphal Jewish religious work. It describes a prophecy of the Lord's coming with holy ones (angels or saints) to bring final judgment upon the ungodly.

Shemihazah and two hundred watchers swear a mutual oath on Mount Hermon before taking human wives, spreading responsibility so no single watcher bears the judgment alone.

When the Most High divided the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the peoples "according to the number of the sons of God" (per the Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint reading; the Masoretic Text, reflected in the KJV above, reads "children of Israel" instead).

God stands in the congregation of the mighty, judging among the "gods" (elohim). Verse 6 declares, "I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High," followed by a pronouncement that they will die like men and fall like princes.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The period of biblical history between the creation of Adam and the flood of Noah, covering Genesis 1 through 6. The term was coined by the English writer Thomas Browne in the seventeenth century.

Penemue is a fallen angel mentioned in 1 Enoch 69 who taught humanity writing with ink and paper, as well as secret wisdom, and is listed among the leaders who led the sons of God astray.

The Nephilim are the powerful, giant figures mentioned in Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:33, whose name is linked to the Hebrew verb “to fall” and has been interpreted as “giants” in ancient texts.

The Fallen Watchers are the two‑hundred angels described in 1 Enoch who descended on Mount Hermon, swore an oath to take human wives, and taught humanity forbidden skills, led by Semjaza with Azazel receiving the greatest blame.

The judgment of the fallen Watchers describes how God bound these angels in darkness, reserving them for fire on the great day, with specific sentences for leaders like Azazel and Semjaza.

According to 1 Enoch, two hundred Watchers bound themselves by a mutual curse before descending. What the mountain meant to the ancient world.
