Pre Flood World

Nephilim giants, the Anakim, were in Canaan when Joshua led the Israelites out of the desert.

Shemihazah and two hundred watchers swear a mutual oath on Mount Hermon before taking human wives, spreading responsibility so no single watcher bears the judgment alone.

The Anakim are described as "great and tall," with the proverbial saying, "Who can stand before the children of Anak?" — a phrase that had become a byword for an enemy no one believed could be beaten.

Joshua cuts off the Anakim from the hill country, but the text carefully notes a remnant survived in three Philistine cities: Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. Gath is the city Goliath later comes from.

Several more sons of the giant in Gath fall to David's men, including one "of great stature" with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. The passage explicitly names them "born unto the giant in Gath."

The KJV's "dead things" translates the Hebrew Rephaim. Many modern translations render it "the dead" or "the departed spirits," who tremble in the waters beneath. The same word used for the giant clans also names the shades of the dead in the underworld.

A third giant clan, the Zamzummim, again measured against the Anakim standard. The verse also records that the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites, showing divine judgment against these clans wasn't limited to Israel's own conquest but extended to other nations clearing their own land.

Goliath of Gath, the giant champion of the Philistines. The Masoretic Text gives his height as "six cubits and a span" (about 9 feet 9 inches), while the older Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint read "four cubits and a span" (about 6 feet 9 inches), the reading most textual scholars favor.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Offspring of the union between the fallen and humanity — the conceptual heart of the Nephilim account and its modern echoes.

In the Greek textual tradition of 1 Enoch 19:2, the fate assigned to the human women who bore children to the fallen Watchers — distinct from the Watchers themselves and from the Nephilim, their giant offspring.

The period of biblical history between the creation of Adam and the flood of Noah, covering Genesis 1 through 6. The term was coined by the English writer Thomas Browne in the seventeenth century.

Augustine of Hippo: the fifth-century theologian whose rejection of the angelic reading in The City of God moved Western Christianity toward the Sethite view.

Penemue is a fallen angel mentioned in 1 Enoch 69 who taught humanity writing with ink and paper, as well as secret wisdom, and is listed among the leaders who led the sons of God astray.

The Nephilim are the powerful, giant figures mentioned in Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:33, whose name is linked to the Hebrew verb “to fall” and has been interpreted as “giants” in ancient texts.

Book of Enoch (1 Enoch): an ancient Jewish text attributed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah, and the fullest ancient account of the Watchers.

A class of angelic beings who, in 1 Enoch, descend to earth, take human wives, and teach forbidden knowledge.

The Book of Enoch describes how the fallen Watchers taught humanity weapons, cosmetics, enchantments, astrology, and divination, and why this forbidden knowledge was deemed sinful.

The entry explains a theory that fallen angels returned after the Flood, causing a second incursion of Nephilim in Canaan, as presented in CK Quarterman's book The Watchers Fallen.

The entry examines whether the biblical giant Goliath can be classified as a Nephilim, tracing his lineage through the Anakim and Rephaim and citing scriptural references.

The judgment of the fallen Watchers describes how God bound these angels in darkness, reserving them for fire on the great day, with specific sentences for leaders like Azazel and Semjaza.

The document explains how Augustine’s rejection of the angelic interpretation of Genesis 6 shifted Western Christianity from an early‑church view of angelic Watchers and Nephilim to the Sethite view, leading to the decline of the Book of Enoch in the West.

The Ziggurat and the Second Incursion: the stepped temple tower of Babel in Shinar, built to lift a shrine toward heaven, and the place where the second incursion of fallen angels is understood to have begun.

Polydactyly: the condition of having extra fingers or toes. First Chronicles 20:6 describes a man of the giant lineage with six digits on each hand and each foot.

Tamim: the Hebrew word in Genesis 6:9 meaning complete, whole, or without blemish, used of Noah as “perfect in his generations.”

If the Flood judged the Nephilim, why do the Anakim and Rephaim appear afterward? Three explanations, weighed.

The Hebrew Bible never says whether the Nephilim could have children. Second Temple Jewish texts fill that silence with two contradicting answers.

A source-by-source breakdown of what 1 Enoch, 2 Enoch, Jubilees, and related ancient Jewish texts actually say about the Watchers, separating direct textual claims from later tradition and modern embellishment.

Why the questions people are asking about Genesis 6 and the days of Noah are surfacing right now — and why that matters.

Jesus compared the end of the age to the days of Noah. A closer look at what those days actually involved.

The article explains how Jesus’ reference to angels not marrying draws directly from the Book of Enoch, revealing early Jewish teachings about the Watchers and Nephilim.

Enoch isn't part of the biblical canon, but Jude quotes it by name as prophecy and Peter borrows its vocabulary directly. Here's what that means.

This post walks the math behind 1 Enoch's giant and checks it against the tallest giant the Hebrew Bible actually measures. It covers cubit standards, manuscript variants, and why a 450-foot being could not stand on its own legs.

Neanderthal DNA shows up in most people alive today. Here is how that fact sits alongside the Genesis genealogies and why it is a real open question, not a settled one.
